1/27/2018

There are number of reasons why you might need to know about what exactly components are inside your PC. Perhaps you’re thinking of purchasing a new game, app or accessory and you want to check whether it’s compatible or if your PC has enough power to run it. Or maybe you’re thinking about selling your PC, in which case you may also want to know how much RAM is inside and which processor it’s using. Thankfully, it only takes a few minutes to do.

How to Get Detailed Information About Your PC

Windows has always been able to tell you almost everything you want to know about your computer. So, if you need to find out your system’s information, here’s our guide on how to get detailed information about your Windows computer.

This guide applies to Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

1. Use the System Information Tool for Software and Hardware Details

The easiest tool that can be used to check the system detailed information is the built-in System Information tool. It’ll show basic detailed system summary, hardware resources, hardware devices and driver details installed on your computer.

To open the System Information tool, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing (Windows key) + R keys on your keyboard.
  2. Type “msinfo32” (without the quotes) into the Open field and hit ↵Enter key. Doing so will open the System Information tool.
  3. In the top-left corner of the System Information window, click System Summary.

There, you should see system detailed information like system model, system type, processor, BIOS version, etc pop up on the right side of the window.

2. Use a Third-Party Tool for More Hardware Details

The built-in System Information tool provides a lot of useful details about your system’s hardware and software information. However, if you’re willing to download a game or app, or if you’re a Windows power user, we recommend using Speccy—a third-party tool as a better option.

Speccy is an advanced tool to check system detailed information developed by Piriform. It has a cleaner interface and additional information that System Information tool doesn’t. It shows more information about your system’s software, processor, RAM, motherboard, graphics, audio, hard drives, optical drives, network cards information and more.

3. Use Command Prompt If Your PC Can’t Boot Normally

You can also use Command Prompt to see a fair bit of the system information about your computer. This method can be useful especially if your computer can’t boot normally.

To do this, follow the simple steps below.

  1. head to the Start menu and search for “command prompt” (without the quotes).
  2. Right-click on Command Prompt from the result and select Run as administrator.
  3. When Command Prompt opened, type the following command and hit ↵Enter key:

    systeminfo

Doing so you’ll see detailed information about your computer like the operating system, including when the operation system was installed, BIOS version, RAM, network adapter details, and other pieces of information.
